Embedded Systems Engineer
We are seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to develop software and hardware for our portable medical diagnostics system. The candidate will join a small multi-disciplinary team dedicated to developing high-quality products. The ideal candidate is a team player, likes overcoming difficult challenges, enjoys learning new skills, and has a “hands-on” problem solving approach. This is an outstanding opportunity for a self-motivated individual to make a key contribution and increase their responsibilities in a high-growth start-up environment.

 

Job responsibilities:
As part of the 1Drop Diagnostics team, the candidate will develop software and hardware for a portable medical diagnostics system based on affordable, low power computer hardware. The candidate will participate in a team oriented environment to define and develop user interface, data management, or embedded system control applications. This includes providing technical guidance on the ARM board, software development, and selecting hardware components. The candidate will be part of the 1Drop Diagnostics engineering team and will work closely with other team members.

Our ideal candidate:
• Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
• Strong C or C++ proficiency
• Development experience on Unix, Linux, or Mac OS X
• Command line Linux
• Electronics Layout/Design
• Experience with embedded software design
• Laboratory test equipment experience: logic analyzer, oscilloscope, multimeter
• Software development in a controlled release environment with versioning and source control
• Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and design

Nice to have skills and experience:
• Experience with ARM development boards (Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone)
• Image processing and algorithms (OpenCV)

In Vitro Diagnostics Scientist
We are seeking an In Vitro Diagnostics Scientist to develop surface immunoassays and be a core member of our engineering team. The candidate will join a small multi-disciplinary team dedicated to developing high-quality products. The ideal candidate is a team player, likes overcoming difficult challenges, enjoys learning new skills, and has a “hands-on” problem solving approach. This is an outstanding opportunity for a self-motivated individual to make a key contribution and increase their responsibilities in a high-growth start-up environment.

 

Job responsibilities:
As part of the 1Drop Diagnostics team, the candidate will develop diagnostic assays on the biosensor platform and will be expected to perform the following:
• Take ownership of the development, optimization and commercialization of a range of diagnostic assays.
• Functionalize diagnostic chips using surface modifications, deposition of capture reagents, detection reagents, and analytes, passivation from non-specific binding.
• Characterize the developed assays using blood and serum samples and statistical analysis (sensitivity, specificity, accuracy).
• Assist in writing technical requirements, design specifications, verification test plans and reports, and risk management plans.

Our ideal candidate:
• Bachelor, Master or PhD degree in biomedical engineering, biomaterials, molecular biology, biochemistry, life sciences or related field.
• Experience integrating biological reagents (proteins, nucleic acids) with medical devices
• Experience developing IVD assays and developing medical devices.
• Understand the requirements for manufacturable devices and associated processes.
• Demonstrated record of achievement and professional maturity in a corporate environment.
• Excellent planning and problem solving skills.
• Ability to balance multiple assignments simultaneously.

Nice to have skills and experience:
• Product development experience using and working with many of the following: microfluidics, molecular biology techniques including, biophotometer, fluorescence microscopy, protein and DNA microarrays.
• Optimization and characterization of surface chemistry for biological systems.
• Experience depositing proteins on surfaces using microarray spotters such as Arrayit, Bio-Rad, Agilent, Sonoplot.
• Biological inkjet printers such as MicroDrop, GeSiM, Scienion.
• Statistical analysis tools such as R, Julia, Python.
• Experience working with a quality system in a regulated industry, preferably medical diagnostics or medical devices.

Optical and Electronics Engineer
Job responsibilities:
As part the 1Drop Diagnostics team, the candidate will help develop the photonics quantification platform and will be expected to perform the following:
• Take ownership of the design and development of optical and electronic systems.
• Construct and test instrumentation prototypes, from proof-of-concept breadboards to pre-production devices.
• Specify and fully characterise optical elements, including light sources, optical filters, imaging sensors, and imaging optics.
• Understand and quantify how optical design impacts system-level metrics like sensitivity, signal to noise, manufacturing constraints and costs, and diagnostics performance.
• When merited, perform computer simulation and modelling of the optical system.
• As part of design control, assist in writing technical requirements, design specifications, verification test plans & reports, and risk management plans.
• Assist engineering and production team efforts to establish procedures and tooling for manufacturing of the optical systems.

 

Our ideal candidate:
• Bachelor, Master or PhD degree in electrical engineering, physics, optical engineering or related field.
• Experience designing, building, and testing optical instrumentation, with a proven track
record of successful technical accomplishments.
• Demonstrated skills in constructing and troubleshooting complex optical systems.
• Demonstrated experience conducting a wide variety of laboratory optical measurements, such as fluorescence detection, absorption/loss measurements, spectral characterisation, beam quality quantification, and characterisation of distortion/aberrations in optical systems.

Nice to have skills and experience:
• Product development experience designing and/or working with any of the following: light sources (LED, VCSEL, diode laser), imaging sensors (CCD, CMOS, photodiode), microscopes, fluorescence detection, and waveguides/fiber optics.
• Design, assembly, and troubleshooting of electronic circuits commonly used in optoelectronics such as current drivers, transimpedance amplifiers, analog to digital converters, feedback control.
• Experience designing thin-film optical coatings.
• Ray tracing methods and tools such as Oslo or Zemax.
• Image processing and algorithms.
• CAD design tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks.
• Experience working with a quality system in a regulated industry, preferably medical diagnostics or medical devices.
