1Drop participated in the Blackbox Connect Accelerator in Silicon Valley.

1Drop Diagnostics saves lives through better and faster portable medical diagnostics. The Swiss and American company has just completed a two-week residential program designed to immerse international start-up founders into Silicon Valley culture.

1Drop was one of just 12 companies taking part in the program, which brings start-ups to California to meet investors, develop relationships in Silicon Valley and learn how to scale in the US.

Throughout the program we had over 50 meetings with business advisors, industry experts, investors, competitors and customers. We met with the complete range of investors, from angel and seed investors to multibillion dollar investment funds. We had the opportunity to pitch to famous venture capital funds on Sand Hill road.

Blackbox Connect was a crash course in creating the message for our company, establishing the culture, adopting the business and fundraising mind-set. It has awakened us to a multitude of possibilities. One of the richest parts of the experience has been knowing talented international entrepreneurs. The contacts in Silicon Valley and around the world will be valuable going forward. It’s not Silicon Valley or the rest of the world, it’s Silicon Valley and the rest of the world. We’re bringing back a Silicon Valley state of mind and our company is stronger because of it.

We heard Macromedia founder Marc Canter, Pascal Finette of Singularity University, Bullpen Venture Capital managing director Duncan Davidson, Futurist Robert Scoble, and Priya Rajan of Silicon Valley Bank among others.

Founded by Fadi Bishara in 2011, Blackbox Connect aims to link foreign high-growth companies with the Silicon Valley network. Over the past four years, more than 3,700 start-ups have applied to the program from over 85 different countries worldwide. Last year alone saw over 2,000 applications with 62 start-ups and 118 founders participating in the program.

More than 1,000 jobs have been created by the 183 start-ups which have gone through Blackbox Connect over the years. Notable speakers have included the cofounders of YouTube, Siri and Square.

“We are building a global network of entrepreneurs”, Mr Bishara said, adding “We’ll soon have non US based programs for Blackbox startups to similarly help them access key resources and collaborate with partners as they continue to expand into new markets such as China, India, Europe and Africa.”
